Why Your List of “Things to Do in Maui” Should Include Maui Snorkeling
The ocean is the biggest attraction of Maui, but have you ever taken an up close look inside? Maui’s warm tropical waters produce colorful coral reefs teeming with a rainbow of marine life: Hawaiian green sea turtles, tropical fish, monk seals, dolphins, whales. Maui snorkeling tours are the ideal way to experience life under the ocean in Maui because, unlike scuba diving, it requires no special training and minimal gear. With our experienced tour guides, you can experience the clear waters of Molokini, the marine mammals of Olowalu Reef outside of Lahaina, the sea cliffs and caves near Turtle Town, or the marine sanctuary of Honolua Bay. Make sure you include snorkeling in your list of things to do in Maui to make the most out of your trip and don’t forget to grab an underwater camera to snap some photos on your Maui snorkeling tour.

Snorkeling at Turtle Town
Our Makena Turtle Town location offers over a dozen coral reefs to snorkel, spread out over an area known as “Turtle Town.” As the name suggests, there are A LOT of turtles in Turtle Town for you to go snorkeling with. Although LARGE snorkel boats also come to Turtle Town to snorkel, they don’t arrive until later in the morning which means you’ll get to go snorkeling without hundreds of people from the boats.
Located on the South side of Maui past Wailea in Makena, Turtle Town generally is sunny and beautiful year round. The early mornings are usually windless which makes perfect conditions for kayaking and snorkeling. Due to near perfect weather conditions, we recommend this location for small kids, first-time paddlers and those who are not comfortable in the ocean.
This is the type of adventure awaiting you when you book a Turtle Town Maui snorkeling tour with Maui Kayak Adventures.
Snorkeling at Olowalu Turtle Gardens
Olowalu Reef, or “mile marker 14” as some people refer to this snorkel location, offers some of Maui’s oldest coral reefs. Some of these Kapuna (elder) corals have been living for over 500 years researchers say. Olowalu is a popular area for snorkeling from the shore due to the fact that the reefs are shallow and start right at the water’s edge. However with the high volume of visitors, these nearshore reefs have been dying off over time due to overuse, sunscreen in the water, and people walking/touching the coral. Let our guides take you offshore to the healthy vivid reefs of Olowalu and show you the turtle cleaning station we call Turtle Gardens. Turtle cleaning stations are areas of the reefs that the turtles congregate at so that cleaner shrimp and fish can eat the algae growing on their shells. This symbiotic relationship is a win/win, as the turtles get cleaned and the fish get fed. It’s a large reef stretching many miles in an even larger ocean… but our certified marine naturalist kayak guides know exactly where to find this turtle cleaning station. In addition to snorkeling with turtles, you’ll also snorkel with tropical fish and possibly see a rare monk seal.
Molokini Snorkeling… by Kayak!
The protected waters surrounding Molokini boasts some of the clearest waters around Maui, making it an ideal place for snorkeling in Maui. Although there are crystal clear waters, there are no turtles to snorkel with at Molokini. Most people take snorkel boats to Molokini, however, the reef is healthiest on the outer walls away from where the large snorkel boats let their guests go snorkeling. Located 4 miles off shore from Turtle Town, this paddle ends up being 9 miles round trip that only a very select few guests make in kayaks. This kayak tour is more about the challenge of paddling to Molokini than it is about snorkeling at Molokini. The weather conditions in Hawaii change very quickly but our skilled kayak guides know how to see these changes coming. We are one of only two companies offering Molokini snorkeling tours by kayak. Please DO NOT attempt to paddle to Molokini unguided. People have been swept to sea and never seen again by attempting this. This is not an overstatement meant to scare you, it is the unfortunate reality. For experienced paddlers only. If you think you’re up for the challenge please give us a call so we can discuss this kayak trip in more detail.
